"Pastry is an art, a craft, and design is a very important part of it for me," said the New York-based chef, who invented the Cronut. In his West Village test kitchen, we took a peek into his process of designing two beloved treats. #dominiqueansel #cronut #kouignamann #pastrychef #pastrydesign #nyc ...

“I've always approached ceramics like a relationship,” said Dina Nur Satti of @nur_ceramics. “I'm working things out with myself while making these pieces.” Years ago, Dina took a leap of faith, leaving her NYC job in fundraising and event production. “Ceramics came as a way for me to explore my own ideas and educate myself. I think of it more like a container for my self-work,” said Dina, who was raised in France and Kenya. “My work evolves while I evolve.” She threw herself into her ceramic work, making pieces inspired by the cultures and rituals of Africa. But while spending 14-hour days in a studio, Dina didn't feel as creative. So earlier this year, she traveled to Ethiopia, where she spent time with a women’s collective that makes ceramics by hand. The experience inspired her to focus on her relationship with ceramics as an art form, rather than ceramics as a business. “A lot of the time what we try to do is like we try to fit ourselves into an idea,” Dina said. “So I've shifted why I'm making, and that's been really liberating.” 🌱 Here, Dina’s “Talata” planter, inspired by Sabaean, an ancient language spoken in Yemen. Watch our story later today to see more of her work.

#DesignSpaces | As we explore design in NYC, we asked @alice_gao and @cb to show us a few of their favorite places. Among them: @thebrantfoundation’s East Village space, which opened in March with a Jean-Michel Basquiat show. This century-old building was built as a substation for ConEd; later, from the 1980s through to 2013, the artist Walter De Maria lived here. The 4-story space, renovated by Richard Gluckman of @GluckmanTang, has 7,000 square feet of exhibition space, 2 gardens and a landscaped roof terrace, as well as this view. 👀

#DesignSpaces | So @cb and @alice_gao walk into a bar ...🍸 As we explore design in NYC, we asked the 2 design photographers to show us a few of their favorite places. The most glimmering on the list: the Top of the Standard. This opulent lounge, all windows, is located on the 18th floor of @thestandard hotel. Designed by @roman_and_williams_, the room’s centerpiece is its bar — their take on a glossy tree, “as though guests are in a shimmering treetop looking out over the city,” as the designers put it. Here, they were inspired by everything from honey to Brazilian design. Visit for tea in the afternoon or jazz and cocktails in the evening. Or do it all and catch the sunset. 🌇

#DesignSpaces | As we explore design in NYC, we asked @alice_gao and @cb to show us a few of their favorite places. Among them: THE GRILL, a midcentury-style chophouse in Mies van der Rohe’s iconic Seagram Building, opened in 2017. The space, with landmarked interiors designed by Philip Johnson and Mies van der Rohe, was home to the Four Seasons restaurant from 1959 until 2016. Its restoration for @majorfoodgroup included restorations of Richard Lippold sculptures and metalic chain curtains by Marie Nichols, as well as a new host stand in the lobby, pictured here with a work by Franz Kline. The dining room’s landmarked status meant that little could be changed, but for fans of midcentury power lunches, that’s OK. 📸: @alice_gao

"The transformation of a material is huge," said @iamfm. The Brooklyn-based furniture designer, whose background is in sculpture, works with a range of both natural and artificial materials to create functional, sculptural pieces. Among the materials he's used so far: rainbow sprinkles, coffee, tapioca pearls, corn and sugar. “I wanted to say, ‘What if I make these high-end materials out of things that are not thought of as high-end?’” he explained. “You explore and you explore, and then you find your groove with something.” The Drum launched Fernando’s career in furniture; the Ridge Drum, shown here, is made from cement and silica. Fernando — who also founded @igc.design , a platform for emerging artists and designers — says the materials he uses need to have a larger meaning. In recent years, his work has addressed issues related to climate change; projects inspired by places like Patagonia and Iceland. And later this year, he said he’ll be working with a new material, “something from out of this world, somewhere beyond.” 👀 . . . #nycdesign #furnituredesign #sustainabledesign #fernandomastrangelo #eastnewyork #brooklyn #modernfurniture #furnituredesigner #sculpturalfurniture #brooklyndesigner ...

“I love scale, and this is no exception,” @emilythompsonflowers said last Saturday. She was standing amid the early stages of a 650-square-foot meadow created for @jasonwu’s #spring2020 debut at @nyfw. Emily is known for taking over spaces with enchanting arrangements of wild materials. “I try to tell people I’m not your average florist,” she said. “I’m trying to espouse the power of the medium and how aggressive it can be and how flowers are not just dainty; they’re bloodsucking demons, too.” Floral design of this type is not for the faint of heart; much of the work is

By dawn on Sunday, the meadow had been transported from a Koreatown studio to the Seaport District. It included about 20 different materials, including solidago, Queen Anne’s lace and delphiniums. “We have a lot of autumnal ideas, but it’s a spring collection, so it’s important that the images reflect that fresh feeling,” Emily said. 6 hours in, a team of more than 20 was rushing to make changes. “Nobody is as rabid for the more ultimate vision as I am,” said Emily, whose background is in sculpture. “It’s not just any grass and any meadow flowers; it’s the right ones, and it’s done with just the right touch. One stem at a time.” #behindthedesign 📸: @alepix . . . . . #emilythompsonflowers #jasonwu #jasonwucollection #madebywildanimals #noflowerfoam #flowersofinstagram #underthefloralspell #NYFW #floraldesign #floralinstallation #ihavethisthingwithplants #floraldesigner #flowerstagram ...

#DesignForAll | This children’s library was once a dark, uninviting storage space at Concourse House, a transitional shelter serving women with young children in the Bronx. When a donor and longtime supporter of Concourse House asked @mkcarchitecture to help change that, “it was the easiest decision in the world,” said Michael K. Chen. MKCA took on design and architecture services for the project probono. Early on, they reached out to designers and manufacturers to raise money for a carpet by @alexproba. When they saw friends and members of the design community express interest in the project, they started soliciting donations for a larger auction. 📚 MKCA got its start designing small, multi-functional spaces; today, they're mostly working on larger projects. Designing a library isn’t much different from designing any other room with shelves, Michael said. Instead, what makes libraries special is “how they connect to communities.” ✨

“We’ve craved creating something that people can actually touch, people can step on, people can experience,” said @letasobierajski, one half of @wadeandleta. This summer, the pair created this “seascape of sculptures” for the South Street Seaport, teaming up with a wood shop near their East Williamsburg studio to bring more than 100 plywood puzzle-piece components together. The sculptures’ Seaport days are fleeting; their next stop is a farm on the North Fork of Long Island. For @wadeandleta, who are married, work and life are intertwined. Their self-portrait project, “Complements,” was their first major project as a duo. Today, as @wadeandleta, their creative energy takes many shapes — often fantastical and always colorful. “We have different mentalities and different skills that we bring to the table, and so it’s a very symbiotic relationship,” Leta said. Right now, they’re working on a project for @hermanmiller, an inspiration for both of them. “It was really surreal for us to see the work that we’ve been making paired with design that has been so integral in our work process,” @wadejeffree said. And for an upcoming project in Singapore, they have to fill a 6,000 square-foot-space. Their projects often begin with materials, and in this case they want to work with something inflatable, Leta said. “We hope that we can maybe create another dimension.”

#ItsSaunaDay 🧖‍♀️ This is not your average sauna. A gift to the town of Kiruna, Sweden, this golden egg was commissioned by @riksbyggen and designed by @studiobigertbergstrom. Kiruna, which is Sweden’s northernmost town, is sinking after years of mining; as a result, the whole community is being relocated. The Solar Egg was meant to be “a symbol of rebirth and new opportunities,” said Mats Bigert of Bigert & Bergström. “It is a way to reach out to people’s hearts, minds and promote new beginnings.” Now the interactive piece of architecture, which can be deconstructed, is on the move.
