Maybe magicians do not exist...but bikes do and with every pedal stroke you can create your own magic wherever you go...
In Alexandera's indigenous language Ojibwemowin we are what we do, described by the verb not the nouns...she moves the bike and creates her own beautiful magic, grows in strength and achives impossible...she inspiries...
Watching my daughter riding her bike, discovering her own abilities, exploring and infusing the nature fills me up and I hope she will grow knowing that she's full of endlesss possibilities...
💚🚴‍♀️🚴‍♀️💚 I am not an artist but I'm pushing my brush...🖤
In the world where everything seems to be treated like an object let's never forget that we are being 🖤

This morning we are celebrating an unprecedented achievement by the extraordinary Fiona Kolbinger. She crossed the finishing line of @thetranscontinental, cycling’s most notorious self-supported ultra endurance event. She had ridden 4000km in a little over 10 days, from Bulgaria to Brest. She led from the early stages. She seemingly smiled much of the way. It was her first ultra event. And she comfortably beat every other incredibly talented competitor, male and female. Chapeau, Fiona - a huge milestone for women, well beyond the bike.🦊🥇🚵🏻‍♀️

@bikepackingcom has asked all riders of @silkroadmountainrace for a quick comment about our set-ups. Here we go.

Bike: I’ll be racing the SRMR 2019 on a Bombtrack Hook EXT-C. I’ve upgraded the wheels to Maxxis Ikon 2.2 (650 b) and changed the original stem to a Redshift ShockStop suspension stem which give me excellent comfort on longer washboard tracks. It features 1 x 11 SRAM Rival double tap shift with a 40 chainring and 11 - 42 rear and hydraulic disc brakes. I’ve added Profile Designs aero bars on which my Sinewave Beacon Cycles lamp is mounted (draining power from a SON 28 dynamo). Bags: Ortlieb handlebar-pack (15 l) for a Sea to Summit Spark IV sleeping bag (comfort temperature - 8 degree)
Apidura framebag (7,5 l) for food, camping gear, tools and spares
2 x Salsa Anything Bags (4.5 l each) mounted on Salsa Anything Cages for Firepot expedition high-calorie food
2 x Revelate designs feedbag (1 l) for drinking bottle, snacks and small accessories
Salsa EXP Series Top Tube Bag (1.2 l) for mobile, power bank and wallet
Gear Highlights: Definitely the Sinewave Cycles Beacon light and USB- charger as well as the flexible stem. The combination of a Six Moon Designs Lunar Solo tent, an ultralight Sea to Summit sleeping bag and sleeping mattress (also StS) will provide some nice quality sleep in the high mountains. I’ll also be carrying a Wahoo Element Bolt for navigation.
Also, check out the other rider’s set-ups. It ranges from tandem, over mountain- and gravel bikes to singlespeed.

BTG race report, day 1

The organizers of the Bikepacking TransGermany 2019 race provided a nice place where all riders could not only sleep, but also get to know each other on the prior day of the start. I didn´t feel good as my stomach was bumping through my body. So, I went to bed at 11 pm to get my belly sorted. A big thunderstorm surprised us during the night. The vast majority of participants prefered bivys to sleep in. They couldn´t handle the rain and needed to escape to a place next to the toilet, sleeping with thousands of mosquitos. So, I was quite happy to brought my tent (even though this night was the first and last time I used it). Alarm was set at 6 am. At 8 am, 150 riders left Basel to start a 1.657 km journey through Germany, Czech Republic and Poland, climbing just a bit more than 20.000 meter. I found myself in a group of six mountain bikers who were riding pretty much the same pace I was riding. I stopped in a small village at km 170 to re-supply some food. The last 40 km of the day, I finished with Matthias, a road cyclist from Switzerland. We found a nice shelter and decided to go to bed early. There is no point to overexcite your body on the first day. Solid start, no major problems with the bike, good performance on the road. However, this would quickly change on the next day…

Distance: 208 km, time: 10,5 h, elevation: 2.850 m, calories: 8.500 kcal

With 3.4 million Instagram followers you likely know Chris Burkard (@chrisburkard). He is one of the world’s most prolific adventure photographers, known for going to extremes to get “the shot”. However, what is less well known is his passion for Cycling. This past year Chris started training for a 844 mile race that circumnavigates Iceland called WOW Cyclothon. He had an incredible race managing to set a new course record by 3.5 hours! And remember, he’s just doing this in his spare time for fun! In this episode I catch up with Chris after his historic race in Iceland and before he set off to Russia for a few weeks. We mostly talk about his race and his passion for cycling. It was a great chat and I hope you find it as enjoyable as I did.⁣

Yours Truly on the Pontlatz Bridge in the upper Inn valley enroute to Martina. Observe those arm warmers completely unpretentious pulled over the jersey arms at that mornings early start and the untidily pulled up gilet (which is pulled up because of the needed access to my jersey pockets in such photo breaks). 🤣😎 Below and behind me flows the Inn which is impounded by the weir Runserau of the TIWAG a bit further downstream. There, much of it’s water gets taken out and led 11.5 km through the mountain all the way down to Imst, where it powers several turbines with 145 m head and 85 cube meters per second design discharge leading to 550 GWh standard capacity of electrical energy.

Follow me into the weekend! :) And follow me into the last 3 weeks to the inaugural Trans Pyrenees Race. I’m so looking forward to this! Doing what I love, sitting on my bike and pedal through fascinating regions and landscapes. Not just around some holiday stay and doing circles but really traveling through it, immersing myself into it by carrying all my stuff with me. But in a minimalistic kind of way. So that my bike is still my bike - and not my kitchen sink. And by racing it. In a sort of ambitious, driven by a racing purpose way. But all the while with the aim of enjoying myself and enjoying the journey. As a race-journey it so beautifully was coined a few years ago in a short film about the TCR. And indeed it was and is the Transcontinental Race which motivated me and which told me the way of unsupported bikepacking as I jumped headlong into this new love of mine with the #TCRNo5 as my first ultracycling and bikepacking event. Today I have 2 Transcontinental Races and 2 Three Peaks Bike Races under my belt. And while I always wanted to visit the Pyrenees it was just this year while racing from Vienna to Barcelona where I hat the opportunity for this. I think it was quite a fitting preparation - both training wise but also having had a first glimpse into the remote and at times harsh beauty of the Pyrenees.

You see me on gravel here on this photo. There are some nice gravel parcours on the #TPRNo1 also. And, since we will have October by then and it already had snowed as low as 2.000 metres above sea level in the last days in some areas I should be prepared to make progress even when the track get’s rough and possibly even snowed upon. Even paved passes could get interesting in such conditions, to say the least. So while I think gravel tires will be too much of a disadvantage over all the tarmac this race will feature (not even just because of the rolling resistance but also because of less grip on wet tarmac) I’m leaning to forgo absolute minimal rolling resistance and aerodynamics for a greater contact patch. So I think I will switch my road wheelset from the 28 and 32 mm Conti GP 5000 in favor for some 35 mm Panaracer Gravelking Slicks..

My amazing wife @tiffo012. Who today completed her last leg of the 1200km Paris-Brest-Paris cycling event. An amazing and inspiring woman who has endurance that I could only dream of. Although not a race, Tiff was the fourth fastest Australian woman to ever complete the event. ~
