The Romano-Egyptian artists who created mummy portraits had a rainbow of dyes and pigments available, allowing them to paint the brilliant colors still visible today: the purple stripes on this portrait's collar were created by mixing indigo, an organic plant dye, with madder, an organic red pigment 🎨

Repost from @ashevilleartmuseum using @RepostRegramApp - It's time for another #MuseumWeek post! Ross Bleckner's Gay Flag is an excellent match to today's theme of #RainbowMW .
A life-long advocate for LGBTQ+ causes, Bleckner puts his identity in this work. Abstraction enhances the meaning of the well-known symbols of both the American and the gay flag. The transparency of the American flag, overlaid by the rainbow flag behind it, suggests an intersection of identities. By darkening the brightness of the rainbow at the base, Bleckner metaphorically makes visible the imminent and historical discrimination against LGBTQ+ people in the United States.

Repost from @americanart using @RepostRegramApp - Rainbows, you say? 🌈 Gabriel Dawe's 2015 installation of "Plexus A1" (2005) at the Renwick Gallery immediately comes to mind to mark #RainbowMW day of #MuseumWeek 🌈 Dawe's architecturally scaled weavings are often mistaken for fleeting rays of light. 🌈 🌈 Do you have a favorite artwork #atSAAM or the #RenwickGallery that uses all the colors of the rainbow? ...

#RainbowMW#MuseumWeek ...
