So just how far away are we from the Jetsons? If you ask any tech expert in autonomous technology, the real answer is still many decades...but not at all due to the lack of vehicle technology.
Autonomous, or self driving vehicles are categorized into 5 main groups.
◾Level 0: Your standard everyday hooptie.
◾Level 1: A large amount of new cars where the vehicle can brake or steer on it's own, but not both simultaneously.
◾Level 2: Partial automation which includes Teslas auto pilot and GM's super cruise technology. Steering & breaking abilities simultaneously, but requiring full driver attention.
◾Level 3: Conditional automation where you can take your eyes off the road, but a driver is still required. Audi's Euro A-8 model for example.
◾Level 4: High automation where the car can do ALL the driving functions, but only under certain conditions....rain or snow permitting.
◾Level 5: Full automation....aka... Ghost Ride the whip.
The technology is there, the main limiting factor is our lack of infrastructure....pot holes, driving lanes, traffic signalling, etc. As well as our adherent traffic laws and associated insurances. We're miles away (pun intended) from being able to have vehicles and roadways fully in tune with each other to the point where you could play craps in the back seats with the crew while headed to the homies crib, without ever glancing at what's ahead.
