Azerbaijan’s capital, Baku, is often likened to Dubai for its outlandish architecture and appetite for gold. Architectural highlights include the curvaceous Heydar Aliyev Center designed by Zaha Hadid; the mirror-like SOCAR Tower; and the Flame Tower skyscrapers pictured behind me, which represent Azerbaijan’s oil and gas reserves.

Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Turkey, is not only one of the most beautiful religious sites I’ve ever seen, but it also has one of the most fascinating and tumultuous histories. 🙌🏼
The building was constructed in 537 AD as a basilica, but then was burned down, reconstructed, burned down again, reconstructed several more times, and eventually transformed into a mosque after the Conquest of Istanbul in 1453. ⛪️ 🕌
In 1935, she was converted into a museum and restored — a process that uncovered the impressive biblical mosaics decorating the walls that had been hidden by plaster and paint after the building’s “conversion” 400 years prior.
Inside you’ll see Christian, Catholic, and Islamic features all meshed into one structure, and even some Viking graffiti, Byzantine architecture, and a few Turkish cats roaming around. 😸
Have you been to the Hagia Sophia yet or is it on your Turkey bucket list? ...
