I Matched. I can now call myself doctor. After 4 grueling years of medical school, and all my hard work before that, I got a job as a physician! ⁣
⁣
Anddd I’m going to Disney World! Back to my home state to work at Florida Hospital as a Family Medicine resident. Couldn’t be more excited and humbled. I know I’m not every programs cup of tea 🤣⁣
⁣
So happy for all my friends and classmates that matched as well. Especially @dr.ben.k for matching NYU and @_alustig for matching Columbia! Love you guys! ⁣

“Maybe it’s safer if I take off the hijab.” •
•
Whether you wear the hijab or not, it’s hard to be a Muslim today. To think that you could be a target of hate, simply because you want to please God, is unfair and cruel. We have to drown out the darkness, with light and strength.

I want to hear how you are coping with what’s happening. I’ve been planning to give away a $100 gift card for @culturehijab and in light of the devastating news, I want to start a conversation. To enter, tell me if you’ve questioned your hijab, and what has given you the strength to keep it on. Tell me if you’ve thought of wearing hijab, and what’s kept you from it. Tag a friends and let’s share our struggles, because odds are, many others feel the same way. It’s scary as hell to be Muslim in today’s world, but it makes it a bit easier to know you’re not alone.

Giveaway is international and will be open for a week, but let’s keep the conversation going for much longer..

Follow your heart, but take your brain with you. Sit with those words for a minute. My heart is in medicine. It always has been, always will be. It is SO difficult for me to take this longer path to get to where I ultimately want to be. There have been countless times when I could have chosen a much quicker path to get to my ultimate goal, but I know logistically (here’s the part where Brain comes in), it would not work out. (Also note- that I am referring to MY circumstances and MY journey which is much different than yours). It’s tempting, believe me, to look at an opportunity through rose colored lenses. It’s easy to convince yourself that saying “yes” to every opportunity is the best way to go about life because “what if you miss out on something”, right? Saying “yes” can be a beautiful thing, but it can also be destructive and it can throw unexpected curve balls your way. When opportunity arises, listen to your heart, trust your gut… BUT don’t forget your brain! Sometimes it can be so hard to try and decipher the difference between “taking a leap of faith” and taking a step back and saying no. It might take a little soul searching. I know lot of people have watched me leap and fly and fall flat on my face multiple times throughout this past year. And a lot of people look at me like I’m crazy and ask, “why the HELL are you still doing this?” I’ll tell you why. Because I WANT IT. I’ve had enough life experiences to realize the importance of pursuing MY goal/ dream/ passion/ calling. So quitting is not an option. But being logical and smart when making new decisions is. My journey may be crazy, but it’s still MY journey and it’s building me and molding me and teaching me lessons that will one day make me an awesome physician… and a better mother… and a better human..

"I was recently working with a physician who educated his white patients on the disease process, diagnosis, and treatment plan, but didn't do this for his minority patients. This struck a chord with me, and got me thinking very seriously about disparities in medicine and the health care system. . For example, as a medical school student and aspiring cardiologist, I inherently know that hypertension is a common condition, especially in black males like myself. But not everyone has access to this information -- or, more importantly, access to physicians who are willing to take the time to educate their patients. And if patients don’t fully understand the depth of their diagnoses, then how can they be expected to adhere to treatment plans? . It's challenging moments like this that only strengthen my drive to become a cardiologist, which comes with the responsibility of not just telling patients what medications to take, but also educating them and fully including them on their treatment plan." . — Dimeji Williams, MS3, Charles R.
