It is so easy to get drawn into a negative spiral and what we need when we are trying to foster a world of recovery, self compassion and nurture is to really start with a place of gratitude and being grateful for what we have rather than focusing our attention on what we don't. That doesn't mean not feeling compassion for how hard things have been for you or how difficult life can be for you at different points but it does mean that you can foster a more positive energy towards yourself and for the life potentially you can be building for yourself. 💗⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

This illustration was one I did a little while ago for my friend @markwfreeman’s book “You Are Not A Rock.” In it, he talks about using procrastination as a means of escaping anxious feelings. Just dropping this onto your feed to remind you that:
(1) Procrastinating is normal but remember to do it in moderation and (2) Whatever you’re procrastinating on, go do it. Or start it. Or try to focus on it for 10 mins and if that doesn’t work take another break. Better to have started and stopped than to never have started at all 🤔

Anger (and grief, but grief isn’t nearly as stigmatized as anger) is an essential part of healing from abuse. It shouldn’t be rushed or glossed over.

Most of the time it isn’t safe to express anger—or assert ourselves in anyway—toward our abusers, and so over time we can actually become desensitized to our internal cues. We train ourselves to ignore it, stuff it down and then take it out on ourselves (or other, safer, people).
.
But anger has an important function. It serves as our internal warning system to let us know when a boundary has been crossed and we need to assert ourselves. It is an essential self-protective mechanism.

Anger helps keep us safe.
.
Many people conflate anger, which is an emotion, with acting-out behaviors... like yelling, hitting, throwing things, breaking things, etc., but there is nothing wrong or dangerous about FEELING or experiencing anger. We can feel things without acting on them.
.
A good way to start doing this is to begin naming our emotions. “I’m feeling so angry right now.” This is called mindfulness and helps us begin to separate ourselves from our emotions, allows us to become the observer of our experience, giving us some space to avoid immediately reacting to strong feelings.

Ultimately anger is our friend, most of us just need to learn a different way of relating to it.
