This was my view while I lived in Eastern Oregon during field school. The hard work put me to sleep by 9pm and I was awake with energy at 5am. I miss the layer of dust that always settled on my skin, and the spooky wind that kept me awake at night. I miss learning every day about archaeology, and the weird and amazing people that became my temporary family.
I'll randomly remember dirt-nados tearing through the campsite as we all ran for cover, our jokes about living in a giant hole, the pain in my arms after sand bag day, and the constant jokes and laughter even as we all suffered together. .
When I struggle to fall asleep I'll imagine myself in my tent back here, where it's silent and isolated, and I don't have bills or a future to plan. Just my basic needs, and more fulfilling hard work. Something about Eastern Oregon feels like home, and working in archaeology just feels so right. I can't wait to get back out there. .
I don't miss the mosquitos.
