On the 18th of June 1983, Sally Ride, as a mission specialist aboard Space Shuttle Challenger, became the first American woman in space. While she may not have been the first woman in space (two female USSR cosmonauts made it to spacevin 1963 and 1982) she remains the youngest American astronaut to travel to space, aged 32. She was also the first woman to operate the shuttle's robotic arm. #womeninstem
