The hot air motors, also called Stirling in honor of its inventor, were developed in the nineteenth century, looking for an alternative to steam engines, and a way to avoid the frequent accidents that caused the explosion of the boilers. 
They always use an external heat source to heat at one end, the air or gas contained in a closed circuit, and their performance depends on the temperature difference with the other end. That circuit is usually formed by two cylinders connected to each other.
Stirling engines are engines that perfectly explain the principles of thermodynamics, taking advantage of the property of gases to increase their volume considerably when heated and do the opposite when cooled.
At the moment one continues investigating on them, since they can use any source of heat, like the solar energy or the geothermal energy.
